A surprising share of the appliance calls we take in Winnipeg aren’t failures at all. The machine is fine. It was installed badly, and it has been slowly destroying itself ever since.
Installation faults are easy to miss because they don’t look like faults. Nothing breaks on day one. The dryer just takes a bit longer. The washer is a bit loud. The fridge runs a bit more than it used to. Months pass, the wear accumulates, and eventually something does break — and it gets blamed on the appliance.
Here’s how to check your own, appliance by appliance.
Washing machine
The signs
- It moves across the floor during the spin cycle
- Heavy banging or a violent shake at high spin, on ordinary loads
- Water is still in the drum at the end of a cycle
- The machine fills and drains repeatedly without progressing
- Damp patches or corrosion behind the machine
What’s usually behind it
Shipping bolts left in. Front-load washers ship with bolts locking the drum so it can’t move in transit. They must come out before the first cycle. Left in, the suspension takes the full force of every spin, and the damage is progressive and permanent.
The machine isn’t level. All four feet need firm contact with the floor. A machine rocking on three feet walks, and the walking itself wears the drum bearings out years early. It is the leading cause of a washing machine shaking or walking across the floor.
The drain hose sits too deep in the standpipe. Pushed too far down, the machine siphons water out while it’s still filling, so it fills and drains in a loop and never completes a cycle.
The drain is too high or too low. Above the pump’s lift capacity and water won’t clear the drum. Below the tub’s flood level and it siphons. Manufacturers publish a specific range for each model, and it varies between brands.
Check it yourself
Push down firmly on each of the four top corners. Any rock at all means the feet need adjusting. Then look behind: the drain hose should form a gentle loop into the standpipe rather than disappearing straight down it, and the inlet hoses should curve rather than kink hard against the wall. If the machine still misbehaves once it’s level, it’s worth booking washer repair in Winnipeg before the bearings go.
Dryer
The signs
- Clothes need two cycles, or come out warm but still damp
- The laundry room gets noticeably hot and humid while it runs
- The machine shuts off partway through a cycle
- Burning or scorched smell
- Unusually heavy lint around the machine
What’s usually behind it
The vent duct is crushed. The most common installation fault we see. The dryer gets pushed tight against the wall and folds the duct flat behind it. Airflow drops, the machine runs hotter and longer, and the thermal fuse eventually gives out.
Plastic or foil accordion duct. Still found in plenty of Winnipeg homes. It sags, collects lint in every ridge, and is a recognised fire risk. Rigid or semi-rigid metal is what should be there.
The duct run is too long or has too many bends. Every elbow adds resistance. A perfectly healthy dryer on a long, twisting run behaves exactly like a broken one, which is why a dryer not drying clothes properly is so often a ducting problem rather than a machine problem.
It vents indoors. Into a basement, a joist space or a wall cavity. It happens more than you’d think, and it puts a great deal of moisture into the building.
Check it yourself
Run the dryer and go outside to the exterior vent. The flap should be pushed well open with strong warm airflow. Barely moving means the duct is restricted somewhere. Then pull the machine out and look at the duct behind it — if it’s folded, flattened or plastic, that’s your answer. A machine that still won’t dry on a clear duct needs dryer repair, usually a heating element or thermal fuse.
Dishwasher
The signs
- Dirty water backing up into the tub
- A persistent smell that returns after every cleaning
- Water on the floor in front of or beside the unit
- The unit shifts or tips slightly when you pull out the loaded lower rack
- The door won’t close square, or catches on the cabinet
What’s usually behind it
No high loop or air gap on the drain hose. The drain hose has to rise up before it descends to the disposal or drain connection. Without that loop, wastewater flows back into the machine. It’s the single most common dishwasher installation error, and it produces both the smell and the standing water.
The unit isn’t secured to the counter or cabinet. A dishwasher is anchored by brackets. Unsecured, it tips forward when the loaded rack comes out and puts strain on the door hinges and the water connections.
Not level. An out-of-level dishwasher doesn’t drain fully — water pools at one side of the tub and sits there between cycles. It also throws off spray arm coverage, which shows up as a dishwasher leaving dishes dirty or wet.
The disposal knockout plug wasn’t removed. When a dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, a plug inside the disposal inlet must be knocked out first. If it’s still there, the machine simply cannot drain.
Check it yourself
Open the door and pull the bottom rack out fully. Any forward tipping means the mounting brackets aren’t doing their job. Then look under the sink: the drain hose should visibly rise toward the underside of the countertop before dropping to its connection. Anything you can’t reach from there is worth a dishwasher repair visit.
Refrigerator
The signs
- It runs almost constantly
- The sides or back feel hot rather than warm
- Doors swing shut on their own, or don’t seal properly
- Small ice cubes, hollow cubes, or a dispenser that trickles
- Water pooling underneath
What’s usually behind it
No clearance for airflow. A fridge sheds heat from its back and sides. Pushed flush into a tight cabinet opening with no gap, it can’t, so the compressor runs far longer than it should. This is the most common reason a new fridge seems to run non-stop, and over time it can develop into a fridge not cooling while the freezer works fine.
Tilted the wrong way. A refrigerator should sit level side to side and very slightly tilted back, so the doors swing closed rather than open. Tilted forward, doors drift open and seals wear unevenly.
A kinked or pinched water line. The supply line to the ice maker gets crushed when the fridge is pushed back into place. Result: slow ice production, small or hollow cubes, weak dispenser flow.
Levelling legs never adjusted. An unlevel fridge doesn’t drain its defrost water properly, which shows up as water underneath.
Check it yourself
Open a door halfway and let go. It should ease shut on its own. Then check that the unit isn’t sitting hard against the wall — there should be a visible gap behind it, and the coils shouldn’t be pressed against anything. Persistent cooling problems after that need refrigerator repair.
Range, wall oven and cooktop
The signs
- The range rocks when you lean on an open door
- Visible gaps between the appliance and the countertop or cabinets
- The breaker trips when several elements run at once
- Uneven baking that no calibration adjustment fixes
- Cabinet or trim surfaces discolouring near the appliance
What’s usually behind it
The anti-tip bracket wasn’t installed. This is a safety device, not an accessory. It anchors a freestanding range so it can’t tip forward when weight goes on an open door. Skipping it is one of the most serious installation shortcuts there is.
The cabinet opening is the wrong size. Built-in ovens and cooktops need precise cutouts. Too tight and the appliance is stressed and can’t shed heat; too loose and it isn’t properly supported.
The circuit doesn’t match the appliance. This comes up most often with induction cooktops, which frequently draw more than the electric cooktop they replaced. If the breaker keeps tripping when you use an appliance, the circuit needs an electrician’s assessment rather than repeated testing.
Missing heat shielding or insufficient clearance. Manufacturers specify minimum distances to adjacent surfaces. Ignore them and the cabinetry takes the heat.
Check it yourself
With the oven off and cool, open the door and press down gently on it. A freestanding range shouldn’t tip or rock at all. If it does, the anti-tip bracket is missing or the range has been pulled out past it. Heating problems that persist on a correctly installed unit are a job for oven repair.
Range hood and over-the-range microwave
The signs
- Steam and cooking smoke drift into the room instead of clearing
- The kitchen stays greasy or humid after cooking
- Loud fan noise with little actual extraction
- A microwave that sits crooked or feels loose
What’s usually behind it
The unit is set to recirculate when it should be ducted. Many hoods and over-the-range microwaves can work either way, switched by a damper and a fan orientation set during installation. Left in recirculating mode with a duct available, it filters air and blows it straight back into the kitchen. Everything sounds right and nothing is being extracted.
The duct isn’t connected. Sitting behind the unit, unattached, or terminating inside the cabinet.
Mounted at the wrong height. Too high above the cooking surface and capture drops sharply. Manufacturers specify a range for a reason.
The microwave isn’t on its mounting plate correctly. Over-the-range units hang from a wall bracket and bolt through the cabinet above. Any looseness means it isn’t properly seated — and these are heavy enough that it shouldn’t be left that way.
Check it yourself
Boil a kettle under the hood on high. Steam should be drawn up and away decisively. If it curls out into the room, either you’re recirculating or the duct isn’t doing its job. Both are worth correcting, because a hood that doesn’t extract is doing almost nothing — and if the fan itself is weak, that’s range hood repair territory.
Why this matters more than it seems
Every one of these faults has the same shape: the appliance compensates. A restricted dryer runs longer and hotter. An unlevel washer absorbs force through its bearings. A fridge with no airflow keeps its compressor running. The machine hides the problem by working harder, and working harder is exactly what wears it out.
That’s why installation faults so often surface as a component failure a year or two later, long after anyone would connect the two. The part that failed was the symptom. The install was the cause — and replacing the part without correcting it means doing it again. It’s one of the main reasons appliances break down sooner than expected.
It’s also why a newer appliance behaving badly is worth checking before you accept that it’s simply a poor machine. Quite often it’s a good machine in a bad position.
Frequently asked questions
Can a bad installation void my warranty?
It can affect coverage. Manufacturers generally exclude damage caused by improper installation — a drum suspension wrecked by shipping bolts left in place is the classic example. Keeping documentation of who installed the appliance and what was done protects you here, and it matters more now that Canada's right-to-repair rules have changed what you can expect from manufacturers.
My appliance was set in place when it arrived. Doesn't that mean it's installed?
Not necessarily. Putting an appliance in position and installing it are different jobs. Levelling, securing anti-tip and mounting brackets, removing shipping bolts, routing the drain hose, connecting and checking the vent duct, and setting a hood's damper are the steps most often skipped when a machine is simply set down where it goes.
Do you sell or deliver appliances?

How soon do installation faults show up?
Some immediately, like a dishwasher that won't drain. Most take months. Wear-driven faults — bearings, thermal fuses, compressors — typically surface in the first year or two, which is late enough that the installation is rarely suspected.
Can you fix an installation problem, or does it need a full reinstall?
Most are correctable in a single visit — levelling, brackets, drain hose routing, duct connections, damper settings. What we can't do is create services that were never there: new circuits, new ductwork, new plumbing runs. Those need the relevant trade first, and then we complete the install.
Is it worth checking an appliance that seems to be working?
If it's new and you have any of the signs above, yes. Correcting an install is straightforward. Replacing a compressor or a bearing assembly that failed because of one is not.
