Washing Machine Shaking or Walking Across the Floor? Here’s Why

You start a load, walk away, and come back to find the washer several inches from where it started — or shaking hard enough that dishes rattle in the next room. It’s alarming the first time it happens, but it’s also one of the more straightforward washer problems to track down.

Why washers shake or move in the first place

A washing machine spins its drum at high speed to extract water, and even a small imbalance in the load gets magnified into a lot of force. Front-load machines spin faster than top-loaders, which is exactly why they’re more prone to visible shaking or “walking” when something’s off.

Signs it’s more than normal vibration

What’s actually causing it

An unbalanced load

This is the most common cause. Heavy items like towels, bedding, or jeans can clump together on one side of the drum during the spin cycle, throwing off the balance. It often shows up after washing a single large item, or a mismatched, unevenly weighted load.

Unlevel or worn leveling feet

Every washer has adjustable feet meant to sit flat and level on the floor. If the floor isn’t quite even, or if the feet have loosened over time — common after moving the machine for cleaning or during a renovation — the whole unit can rock and shift with each spin cycle.

Worn shock absorbers or suspension springs

Front-load washers rely on shock absorbers or springs to keep the drum stable inside the cabinet. As these wear out, they stop absorbing the drum’s movement the way they should, and vibration that used to be minor turns into a full shake.

Shipping bolts left in place

If this is a newer washer, there’s a chance the transport bolts from installation were never removed. These bolts hold the drum rigid for shipping, and leaving them in causes serious vibration once the machine starts a normal spin cycle.

What you can check before calling a technician

  • Redistribute the load and run a shorter cycle to see if it was a one-time balance issue
  • Check that all four feet are touching the floor evenly and are tightened
  • Confirm the washer is level using a bubble level from side to side and front to back
  • If this is a recent installation, confirm the shipping bolts were removed
